Lowest Sodium Chicken Sandwiches at Every Major Chain, Ranked

Lowest sodium chicken sandwiches at every major chain, ranked by mg — grilled vs crispy, nuggets and strips compared, and the orders that stay under 900 mg. Official data.

Chicken has a healthy halo it hasn’t earned at the drive-thru. A fried chicken sandwich is usually the highest-sodium sandwich on the menu — worse than most burgers — because it stacks a brined filet, seasoned breading, pickles, and sauce on one bun. The typical crispy chicken sandwich runs 1,100–1,460 mg. The same chain’s grilled version is almost always hundreds of milligrams lower.

The single best full-size chicken sandwich we track: Chick-fil-A’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich at 770 mg with 28 g of protein. The worst: a three-way tie at the top of the fried pile around 1,400–1,460 mg.

Every number below comes from official chain nutrition data.

Two notes on that table. The White Castle slider (680 mg) is a slider — roughly half a sandwich — so it’s portion size, not a lighter recipe. And the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s entries are charbroiled, not breaded; their 1,310–1,350 mg shows what BBQ sauce and the bun do even when you skip the fryer.

Grilled beats crispy everywhere

This is the most reliable pattern in fast-food chicken. Same chain, same sandwich slot, different build:

  • Chick-fil-A: Grilled 770 mg → original fried 1,400 mg → Deluxe 1,460 mg. Going grilled saves 630 mg, and you keep 28 g of protein either way.
  • Wendy’s: Grilled 850 mg → Crispy 1,100 mg → Spicy 1,220 mg.
  • Sonic: Grilled 1,050 mg → Crispy 1,290 mg.
  • Burger King: Original Chicken Sandwich 1,140 mg → Crispy Chicken Sandwich 1,290 mg.

Even Chick-fil-A’s Grilled Chicken Club — the grilled filet with bacon and cheese — is 1,240 mg, still below the plain fried original at 1,400 mg. The breading and brine cost more sodium than bacon does. More on that chain in our Chick-fil-A sodium guide.

Why chicken sandwiches stack sodium so fast

Four layers, each salty on its own:

  1. The brine. Most chains brine or inject chicken filets with a salt solution for moisture. The sodium is inside the meat before anything touches it — you can’t scrape it off.
  2. The breading. Seasoned breading is flour plus a salt-heavy spice blend, and it adds sodium and holds frying oil. This is why fried filets run hundreds of milligrams above grilled ones at the same chain.
  3. Pickles. Standard on almost every chicken sandwich, and they’re cucumber slices stored in brine. Small, but they stack.
  4. The sauce. Whataburger’s own menu shows the swap cleanly: the same grilled chicken sandwich is 980 mg with mayonnaise and 1,030 mg with Whatasauce — 50 mg from sauce alone. Mayo-based and BBQ sauces push harder; Carl’s Jr.’s charbroiled BBQ sandwich hits 1,310 mg without any breading at all.

Grilled skips layers one and two (well, most of one — some grilled filets are still marinated). That’s the whole 300–600 mg gap.

Nuggets, strips, and bone-in chicken

Nugget math is friendlier than sandwich math because there’s no bun, no pickles, and less surface for breading per bite:

A 4–6 pc nugget order (330–600 mg) beats every full-size chicken sandwich except the White Castle slider. The standout for protein: Popeyes Blackened Chicken Tenders — 33 g of protein for 780 mg and only 170 calories — because “blackened” means seasoned, not breaded. Watch the dipping sauces, though; they’re added sodium on top of these figures.

Bone-in grilled chicken is the real floor. El Pollo Loco’s Fire-Grilled Chicken Wing is 150 mg, KFC’s Grilled Chicken Drumstick is 300 mg, and El Pollo Loco’s leg and thigh are 380 mg and 420 mg. Even a full KFC Grilled Chicken Breast (710 mg, 38 g protein) or El Pollo Loco Fire-Grilled Chicken Breast (820 mg, 34 g) beats most sandwiches.

Chicken without the bun

If you’re at a chain with no good sandwich option, these all come in under 1,000 mg:

  • Del Taco Grilled Chicken Street Taco — 300 mg (the full-size Grilled Chicken Taco is 510 mg)
  • CAVA Grilled Chicken — 480 mg, 28 g protein
  • Whataburger Garden Salad with Grilled Chicken — 770 mg (Apple & Cranberry version: 780 mg)
  • McAlister’s Deli Garden Salad, no dressing, with grilled chicken — 780 mg, 36 g protein
  • Denny’s Grilled Chicken Breast dinner — 780 mg, 42 g protein
  • Culver’s Garden Fresco with Grilled Chicken — 913 mg, 45 g protein

Ordering rules

  1. Grilled first, always. It’s the single biggest lever — 300–600 mg at the same chain.
  2. Under 900 mg is a realistic ceiling. Chick-fil-A grilled (770 mg), Wendy’s grilled (850 mg), or a 4–6 pc nugget order fits a 1,500–2,300 mg day with room to spare.
  3. Sauce is a dial, not a given. Whataburger’s own menu shows a 50 mg swing between sauces on the identical sandwich. Ask for it on the side or skip it.
  4. “Club,” “deluxe,” and “spicy” all mean more sodium. Bacon, cheese, and spicy coatings stack on top of the base filet — Chick-fil-A’s Deluxe is 1,460 mg against the plain grilled’s 770 mg.
  5. Skip the combo. These numbers are the sandwich alone. Fries and a drink add their own sodium — see our guide to ordering under 800 mg total.

Traps to skip

  • Popeyes Classic and Spicy Chicken Sandwiches — 1,440 / 1,460 mg. The viral sandwich is a sodium bomb, breading plus brine plus pickles plus sauce in one.
  • Chick-fil-A Deluxe — 1,460 mg. Cheese and toppings push it past the plain fried original.
  • Jack in the Box Grilled Chicken Sandwich — 1,440 mg. Proof that “grilled” isn’t magic at every chain; it’s the highest-sodium grilled option we track.
  • 10-pc nugget orders as a “light” meal — 820–1,200 mg depending on the chain. The 4-pc (330–400 mg) is the portion that actually works.
  • Assuming salads are safe by default — they’re only on this list without dressing. Bottled dressing can double the number.

FAQ

What is the lowest-sodium chicken sandwich at a major chain? The Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Sandwich at 770 mg with 28 g of protein, followed by Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich at 850 mg. The lowest fried option is White Castle’s Crispy Chicken Slider at 680 mg, but it’s slider-sized — among full-size fried sandwiches, Wendy’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich (1,100 mg) is the floor.

Is grilled chicken always lower in sodium than crispy? At every chain where both exist in our data, yes. Chick-fil-A’s grilled is 770 mg versus 1,400 mg fried; Wendy’s is 850 mg grilled versus 1,100 mg crispy; Sonic is 1,050 mg versus 1,290 mg. Grilled filets skip the seasoned breading and usually the heavy brine, which is where the gap comes from.

Are chicken nuggets lower in sodium than chicken sandwiches? Usually, in small orders. A 4-pc nugget runs 330–400 mg at McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King — far below any full-size sandwich — because there’s no bun, pickles, or sauce. But a 10-pc climbs to 820–1,200 mg, and dipping sauces add more on top.

Why is fried chicken so high in sodium? Three stacked sources: the brine or injection marinade inside the meat, the salt-heavy seasoned breading, and the toppings (pickles, sauce). That’s why the same chain’s grilled and fried sandwiches differ by 300–600 mg even at identical sizes.

What chicken sandwich has the most protein for the least sodium? Zaxby’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich: 42 g protein for 1,180 mg, and Culver’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich: 41 g for 1,190 mg. The best ratio overall is Chick-fil-A’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich — 28 g for just 770 mg. Outside sandwiches, Popeyes Blackened Tenders give 33 g for 780 mg.
